How VAT is calculated

Adding VAT

VAT is charged on the amount before tax. At the UAE standard rate of 5%:

VAT = amount × 0.05   and   total = amount × 1.05

Removing VAT from a total

When a price already includes VAT, divide to find the amount before tax. Do not take 5% off the total: that removes too much.

amount before VAT = total ÷ 1.05   and   VAT = total − amount before VAT

Amounts are rounded to the nearest fils. This calculator is a convenience and not tax advice; how a particular supply is treated is a question for the Federal Tax Authority's guidance or your tax adviser.

VAT Calculator Questions

Multiply the price by 0.05 to get the VAT, then add it to the price. For AED 1,000 the VAT is AED 50 and the total is AED 1,050. Multiplying the price by 1.05 gives the total in one step.

Divide the total by 1.05 to get the amount before VAT, then subtract that from the total to get the VAT. For AED 1,050 the amount before VAT is AED 1,000 and the VAT is AED 50. Taking 5% off the total is a common mistake and gives the wrong answer.

The standard rate of VAT in the UAE is 5%. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt. If you are unsure how a supply is treated, check with the Federal Tax Authority or your tax adviser.
