Using the keypad
Measurements are keyed in point notation, so you only need digits and the point key:
| You key in | It means |
|---|---|
9.5 | 9 ft 5 in |
9.10 | 9 ft 10 in |
9.5.5 | 9 ft 5.5 in (5 1/2 in) |
0.6.25 | 6 1/4 in |
9.5 + 2.10 = | 12 ft 3 in, shown as 12.3 |
9.6 × 2 = | 19 ft: the number after × or ÷ is a plain number |
Under the display you always see the same value written out in feet and inches with a fraction, and in millimetres. Tap a line in the history to bring that result back and carry on from it.
Typing a sum instead
Switch to Type a sum to write a calculation the way it appears on a drawing.
| You want | Type | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Add two measurements | 5' 6 1/2" + 3' 4 3/4" | 8' 11 1/4" |
| Subtract | 10' - 3' 7 5/8" | 6' 4 3/8" |
| Multiply by a number | 2' 3 1/2" × 4 | 9' 2" |
| Divide into equal parts | 10' ÷ 3 | 3' 4" |
| Area | 12' × 10' | 120 ft² (11.15 m²) |
| How many fit | 10' ÷ 2' 6" | 4 |
| Mix metric and imperial | 1 m + 1' | 4' 3 3/8" (1,304.8 mm) |
Ways to write a length
All of these mean five feet six inches: 5' 6", 5'-6", 5 ft 6 in,
5ft6in, 66" and 5.5 ft. Metric lengths work too: 2400 mm,
240 cm, 2.4 m.
Two things to know
- Put a space on each side of a minus sign.
5'-6"is five feet six inches, as on a drawing;5' - 6"is five feet take away six inches. - Multiplication and division are done before addition and subtraction, so
1' + 2' × 3is 7 feet.
Short notation
Tick "Read 9.5 as 9 ft 5 in" to type measurements with a dot between feet and inches, which is quick on a
number pad: 9.5 + 2.10 is 9 ft 5 in plus 2 ft 10 in. Three parts always work, with or without the
tick: 9.5.5 is 9 ft 5.5 in.
