Steel Weight Calculator in kg and Tonnes

Pick a section, enter its size in millimetres and the length in metres. You get the weight per metre, per piece and in total, for steel, stainless steel or aluminium.

How steel weight is calculated

Weight is volume multiplied by density. The calculator finds the cross-section area, multiplies by the length, and applies the density of the material:

weight (kg) = area (mm²) × length (m) × density (kg/m³) ÷ 1,000,000

For mild steel that is area × 0.00785 kg for every metre.

Area formulas

SectionArea
Round bar, rebarπ × d² ÷ 4
Square barside²
Flat bar, platewidth × thickness
Round pipeπ × (OD² − ID²) ÷ 4, where ID = OD − 2 × wall
Hollow sectionwidth × height − (width − 2 × wall) × (height − 2 × wall)
Angle(leg A + leg B − thickness) × thickness

Rebar weight per metre

For round bar the formula reduces to the site rule d² ÷ 162, with the diameter in millimetres.

Diameterkg per metre12 m bar
8 mm0.3954.74 kg
10 mm0.6177.40 kg
12 mm0.88810.65 kg
16 mm1.57818.94 kg
20 mm2.46629.59 kg
25 mm3.85346.24 kg
32 mm6.31375.76 kg

Hollow sections and angles are calculated with square corners. Rolled sections have rounded corners, so manufacturers' tables can differ by a few percent. Use the supplier's figure when you order.

Steel Weight Questions

Weight is volume times density. Work out the cross-section area in square millimetres, multiply by the length, and multiply by the density of steel, 7,850 kg per cubic metre. For one metre of length this is area in mm² × 0.00785 kg.

For a round bar or rebar, weight per metre in kg is the diameter in mm squared, divided by 162. A 12 mm bar weighs about 0.888 kg per metre and a 16 mm bar about 1.58 kg per metre.

Mild steel 7,850 kg/m³, stainless steel 304 7,930 kg/m³, stainless steel 316 8,000 kg/m³ and aluminium 2,700 kg/m³. Rolled sections have rounded corners, so published tables can differ from the calculated weight by a few percent.
